Vibe coding
Vibe coding is a way of programming in which, instead of writing code line by line, you describe what you want to build in words and have AI write the code. The person runs the result and keeps asking for changes in words until they are satisfied.
About this term
How it works
The user describes the features they want in plain language, such as 'Build me a to-do list app.' An AI coding tool generates the code and even runs it, and the user checks the result on screen. If they don't like it or an error occurs, they describe the situation in words again and the AI fixes the code. In this process, users often judge only by 'feel (vibe)' and results, without reading the code closely.
Why it matters
People who have never learned to code can now build simple apps, websites and work automation tools themselves. For developers, it is also a way to turn ideas into prototypes quickly. As LLMs and coding agents have advanced, the term has come into wide use as a symbol of the shift toward 'programming as giving instructions in words.'
Things to know
If you build without understanding the code, it is hard to notice security holes or hidden bugs. It can be risky to use the result as-is for services that handle passwords or personal information, or for products used by real customers. So vibe coding suits prototypes and personal tools well; for important services, a step where people review and test the code should be added.
Example
In a conversational AI app builder, if you type 'Build me a web page that organizes uploaded photos by date,' the AI creates the screen and code and shows a preview right away. The user finishes it by making changes in words only, such as 'Make the button bigger' or 'Sort by newest first.'
