Microsoft and NVIDIA unveil RTX Spark-based Surface devices; Windows Copilot gets local file access and OS-wide actions
Announced October 7, 2026
What happened
Microsoft held a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco. On stage, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the two companies are designing hardware and software together to run AI agents on Windows PCs (NVIDIA official blog). According to The Verge, the announcements were: - Surface Laptop Ultra: powered by RTX Spark, NVIDIA's Arm-based chip. It starts at $2,599 (8-core CPU, 24GB RAM, 512GB). - Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: available for preorder at $5,999, shipping in November. - Copilot: demonstrated accessing local files on the PC and carrying out tasks across the OS. Microsoft presented this as part of its 'Hybrid Intelligence' vision. The collected items do not give a release date for the Copilot features.
Why it matters
Windows and NVIDIA have together made official the move of agent workloads from the cloud to local PCs. Access to local files and control of the OS could boost productivity, but they also raise security and permission-management issues.
