How it works
Each model has a repository with an address in the form 'organization/model-name'. The repository contains weight files (safetensors, etc.), a configuration file describing the architecture, tokenizer files and a model card that serves as documentation. Libraries such as transformers download the files and load them right away given just this name. Dataset repositories and demos you can try directly on the web (Spaces) work the same way.
How to read a model page
First, read the size (B means billion parameters), purpose (Instruct, etc.) and format (GGUF, AWQ, etc.) from the name. Looking at the weight file sizes in the file list gives a rough idea of the memory needed. In the model card, check the license, supported languages, usage and limitations. Download counts and likes are only signals of popularity, not guarantees of quality.
Things to know
Since anyone can upload, you need to tell whether a model comes from an official organization account or is a conversion made by a third party. Some models can be downloaded only after agreeing to terms. Older-format weight files can execute code when loaded, so it is better to choose the safe safetensors format first. For public news known through 'community reports,' it is safer to check the actual repository directly.
Example
This site also has news that LightOn released the OCR (optical character recognition for documents) model 'LightOnOCR-3-4B' on Hugging Face. When developers see news like this, they find the model on the organization's page, gauge its size from the '4B' in the name, check the format and license in the file list and model card, then download and test it with a few lines of code.
