IDC: global PC shipments fell 20% year over year in Q3, driven by AI-infrastructure memory shortages and rising prices (report)

Announced October 8, 2026

What happened

IDC said on the 8th that global PC shipments in Q3 2026 were 62.7 million units, down 20.1% from a year earlier and 9.1% from Q2. That is more than five times the Q2 decline (3.8%). The usual Q3 rise in shipments from the back-to-school season did not appear this year. IDC cited inventory built up in the first half ahead of memory price increases, supply chain constraints, and memory chip shortages stemming from AI infrastructure demand.

Provider claims

Jitesh Ubrani, research director at IDC, said, "Manufacturers and distributors secured inventory ahead of price increases, which disrupted typical seasonal demand patterns."

Why it matters

It is an indicator that AI data centers absorbing large amounts of memory are directly hitting consumer device markets such as PCs. Read together with the same-day report of reduced iPhone 18 Pro component orders, it points to AI-driven memory price increases spreading to device prices and demand. It could also weigh on sales of the recently released AI PCs with RTX Spark.
