Gyeonggi Provincial Council gives notice of ordinance letting the province designate and support 'AI clusters' directly (report)

What happened

The 'Ordinance on the Designation and Support of Gyeonggi Province Artificial Intelligence Clusters,' sponsored by Jeon Seok-hoon, a member of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council's Future Science Cooperation Committee, was put up for legislative notice on the 6th. Under the draft, the province would designate clusters based on applications from cities and counties and support the building of shared facilities and corporate testing. Korea's AI Basic Act, which took effect in January this year, gave local governments the authority to designate such clusters.

Why it matters

An early case of a local government setting up a procedure to directly designate AI industrial clusters after the AI Basic Act took effect.
