Cloudflare to acquire Deno, boosting self-hosted workerd; Deno runtime support ends in one year (community report)

Announced October 9, 2026

What happened

According to a write-up by Simon Willison, Cloudflare is acquiring Deno. The goal is to make self-hosting workerd an officially supported way to build and run apps using the Workers programming model, based on 'celld', an open-source project the Deno team first released in August (an implementation of the Durable Objects pattern from Cloudflare Workers). The Deno runtime will be supported with monthly bug-fix releases for the next year, after which Cloudflare will no longer maintain it.

Why it matters

Serverless runtimes widely used to deploy agents and AI apps are converging on the Cloudflare Workers model. Teams running services on Deno need to plan a migration within a year.
