Announced October 9, 2026
What happened
On the 9th, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited the planned semiconductor cluster site in Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City (the planned relocation site of Gwangju's military airport and ammunition depot) with executives including SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung. They checked readiness for land, power, water, and transportation. According to Bloter, SK is considering building the Yongin cluster and the Gwangju fab at the same time to meet growing demand for AI memory.
Provider claims
Chey: "We will build the Gwangju semiconductor fab as quickly as possible" (as quoted in the report).
Why it matters
This signals that demand for AI memory such as HBM is speeding up Korea's plans to expand memory production capacity. Higher capacity will affect the AI accelerator supply chain going forward.
