Google AI Edge open-sources 'ML Drift', an on-device GPU inference engine (community report)
What happened
According to a Google Developers Blog announcement shared on Reddit, the Google AI Edge team released ML Drift under the Apache 2.0 license. It is a cross-platform GPU compute engine for on-device AI/ML inference. It abstracts away hardware and low-level API differences across OpenGL ES, OpenCL, Metal and WebGPU, letting developers build real-time ML features, from video effects to generative AI, on multiple platforms.
Provider claims
The description of it as a 'high-performance' engine is Google's.
Why it matters
Because a single engine can handle mobile, web and desktop GPUs, it becomes easier to deploy on-device generative AI across multiple platforms.
