Anthropic launches long-term 'Cyber Mission' for defenders, offers free 'OSS Scanner' to open-source projects (report)
Announced October 8, 2026
What happened
Anthropic announced 'Anthropic Cyber Mission', a long-term program providing tools, research, and resources to defenders who protect software and systems. According to the official post, the program starts with two areas. The Verge reported that Anthropic will offer free vulnerability scanning to open-source projects that apply, through a new service called 'OSS Scanner'.
Provider claims
Open-source projects that apply will receive "thorough, regular security scans with our most capable models" for free, the company said (as quoted by The Verge).
Why it matters
It is an attempt to apply frontier models' vulnerability-detection capabilities directly to defending the open-source supply chain. It also fits an industry trend of responding to recent AI-assisted hacking incidents.
