OpenAI's first teen usage report says teens use ChatGPT under 15 minutes a day on average, as Common Sense assessment fuels safety debate (report)

Announced October 7, 2026

What happened

According to AI Times, OpenAI released its first report on teen usage on October 7 (local time). The report says teen users spend less than 15 minutes a day on ChatGPT on average. On the same day, Common Sense Media said its testing of ChatGPT for teens found cases where parent alerts and crisis support guidance did not work properly in high-risk conversations involving suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders.

Provider claims

OpenAI claimed that its safeguards for teens are working.

Why it matters

OpenAI appears to be answering Common Sense Media's 'unacceptable risk' rating from the day before with usage data. Time-spent metrics and whether safeguards work in high-risk conversations are separate issues, and this could become a point of contention in debates on regulating AI for teens.
