OpenAI applies for 15 top-level domains including .chatgpt, .agi and .mcp; 13 applicants including Google and Meta vie for '.agent' (report)

Announced October 7, 2026

What happened

ZDNet Korea, citing The Register, reported that ICANN received 1,615 applications from 481 applicants for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) between April 30 and August 12. It is the first new gTLD application window since 2012. A Reddit post, based on the application list ICANN published on October 7, said OpenAI applied for 15 domains, including .openai, .chatgpt, .gpt, .agi, .asi, .agent, .mcp and .codex. According to the same post, .agent drew 13 applicants including OpenAI, Google and Meta, making it the most contested string in this round; .agi drew 7, and .asi and .mcp drew 5 each. The ICANN fee is $227,000 per application.

Why it matters

It signals that core AI terms such as 'agent' and 'mcp' are starting to be treated as assets in the internet's address system. Who secures these domains could shape control over branding and addressing in the agent ecosystem.
