Musk says he will build and run the 'Terafab' AI chip plant himself, dismissing talk of TSMC operating it (report)

Announced October 7, 2026

What happened

According to AI Times, Elon Musk said on X on the 7th, local time, that "we will build and operate" Terafab, the large AI chip plant planned in Texas. He was denying recently raised speculation that TSMC might take part in operating it. Musk added, "If TSMC wants, they could lease part of Terafab, but nothing more."

Provider claims

Musk claimed he would leave "no doubt whatsoever" about operating it directly (as quoted in the report).

Why it matters

A party with no experience running advanced semiconductor processes has said it will operate a large AI chip plant itself, so the plan's feasibility and timeline become a variable for the AI chip supply chain. Whether the production structure concentrated at TSMC changes is also worth watching.
