OpenAI makes Codex Auto-review free for all signed-in ChatGPT users (report)
Announced October 6, 2026
What happened
According to AI Times, OpenAI opened 'Auto-review' to all users signed in to ChatGPT for free in a Codex update. The feature has a secondary agent review the actions an agent is about to take in real time and block commands that are dangerous or off-task. Thibault Sottiaux, a product lead at OpenAI, said on X on the 6th (local time) that it can be turned on under 'Settings > Permissions > Auto-review'.
Provider claims
OpenAI said it reduces 'decision fatigue' on long-running tasks by blocking dangerous commands without users having to approve every step.
Why it matters
A safeguard that replaces step-by-step human approval with automatic review by a secondary agent is now a free default option. It could affect how much autonomy coding agents are given and how permissions are managed.
