Mistral AI releases public preview of Mistral Large 4, with open weights planned for later this month
Announced October 6, 2026
What happened
Mistral AI has released a public preview of Mistral Large 4, and the preview API is available now in Mistral Studio. The company said it plans to release the weights later this month. TechCrunch described the model as a large 1T-scale multimodal model. According to Simon Willison, 49 billion of its 1 trillion total parameters are active, and the API supports only two reasoning levels: 'none' and 'high'.
Provider claims
Mistral AI claims ML4 pushes forward the frontier of open-weight performance. According to reports, it was trained on the company's own cluster of 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs.
Why it matters
If the weights of a 1T-class model are released as planned, a European company will be back in the large open-weight race, which is currently led by US and Chinese companies. The release date and license for the weights still need to be confirmed.
