Google launches a SynthID-based AI content detection website worldwide that can also flag other companies' content (reports)

Announced October 7, 2026

What happened

According to TechCrunch, Google has launched a new SynthID website where anyone can check whether an image, video, or audio file was generated by AI. Ars Technica reported that the improved SynthID detector is available worldwide and can identify AI content made by other companies such as OpenAI, as well as content made by Google. The collected sources do not give the detection accuracy or say which third-party models are supported.

Provider claims

The tool can identify AI-generated content from other companies such as OpenAI, as well as Google's own content (according to reports).

Why it matters

If a tool that used to check only Google's own watermarks now covers other companies' content, it could become the de facto standard detection tool for everyday users. It also fits the regulatory push to label AI-generated content, as seen in OpenAI's text watermarking for the EU, covered the previous day.
