GitHub makes Copilot local sandboxing generally available, adds local model discovery in the CLI and a dedicated leaked-secret detection model

Announced October 7, 2026

What happened

GitHub announced three updates in its changelog. - Local sandboxing generally available (GA): local sandboxing for GitHub Copilot is now generally available in Copilot CLI, the Copilot app, and VS Code sessions that use Agent Host. - Local model discovery in the CLI: starting with Copilot CLI 1.0.94-0, the /model command lets users find and select supported models from the local environment they are running. - Leaked-secret detection model: GitHub released a dedicated, context-aware model for detecting leaked secrets.

Provider claims

GitHub said it provides secret protection that fits how you develop, whether you write the code yourself or an AI agent generates it.

Why it matters

Running coding agents in isolation on developer machines is now a generally available feature. It eases a security concern that had held back agent adoption, and together with local model selection it gives companies more ways to keep control.
